In 1943, as young widow with 3 children, Gertrude Roberts (then Gertrude Dodge) bought the house on the South Common in Chelsea from Millie Tracy whose family had owned the house since the mid to late 1800’s. When Tracy’s owned the house, it was connected to their hardware store in a horseshoe shaped building. Some Tracy hardware store memorabilia remain in the house today. Gertrude was a Chelsea native who played an active role in her community. She was a star in Chelsea High School’s girl’s basketball team 1925 to 1930. Her father, Edwin Larkin formed the Larkin Contra Dancers which performed annually at the Tunbridge Fair and danced at the 1939-40 and 1964-1965 New York World’s Fair winning a competition in 1939, beating out dance teams sponsored by major industries. Gertrude , with her husbands Wallace Dodge and William Roberts, danced and played instruments with the Contra Dancers until Gertrude was in her late 80’s. She also served as an officer with the group. Most of the memorabilia from the Contra Dance history is with the ongoing group although some remains with the house. Gertrude also was an active member in the Eastern Star, the Auxillary VFW and many other community groups. She was a positive and influential role model for the community. |
